Naturally drive away ants in the greenhouse

As annoying as they may be at first, it is still too superficial and even wrong to generally call ants in the greenhouse pests . They have many useful functions and, for example, dispose of dead insects, contribute to a good portion of useful biomass when creating their nests and prefer to eat the larvae of leaf beetles and the butterfly caterpillar, which is unpopular in gardens.

Just relocate ant nests?

But still: You should do something against ants in the greenhouse as quickly as possible and start at the lowest level, namely with the home remedies. A flower pot filled with wood wool, which is placed bottom up near the ants' approach path, will help in this case. A few days later, the ants and their larvae will settle there. The pot and its new inhabitants now only have to be relocated far enough .

What ants are not into at all

When insects perceive certain fragrances or particularly striking essential oils, they react relatively quickly with a trigger. Cinnamon has proven to be particularly effective for ants in the greenhouse, but the trick also works very reliably with the following home remedies:

  • Chili powder
  • Lemon peel
  • Cloves as well
  • Lavender flowers

With the targeted spreading or laying out, you create reliable barriers that are usually avoided and not frequented by ants.

The fast ant trap for greenhouses

A mixture of stale beer and a small dash of honey in a bowl that is not too high attracts ants almost magically. You will notice the scent, which is almost impossible to resist, very quickly to try to satisfy your sweet tooth. For the animals, however, this project will be fatal as they will drown in the liquid.

Chemical agents when nothing helps

To render ants completely harmless in the greenhouse and using only natural means would be an illusion. If the destructive effect of the little beasts threatens to get out of hand, only ant poison really helps. It is effective enough to quickly and completely eradicate the ant colony and its queen. Nevertheless, such chemicals must be handled consciously and in moderation, as the cultivated plants in the greenhouse are not inedible with these poisons, but are nevertheless contaminated.

Tips

Check especially in warm and humid temperatures whether ants are beginning to settle in the greenhouse. The animals are usually recognizable first, preferably below the leaves of plants. However, larvae are also often hidden in the upper soil layers.
