Scarifying and overseeding - a beauty treatment for your lawn

Scarifying and leveling out unevenness - this is how it works

The lawnmower is used for the first stage in the beauty program. Mow the green area at the lowest possible level. Then scarify the lawn lengthways and crossways to comb out all weeds and moss. Please set the scarifier (€ 76.01 at Amazon *) to a depth between 2 and 4 mm. You can sweep away the clippings completely with the rake.

The scarified lawn not only reveals all the bare spots, but also brings bumps to light. You can even out the bumps with a mix of sifted garden soil and sand in a ratio of 2: 1.

Skillful overseeding guide - How to do it right

It is an advantage to have lawn seeds from the original sowing in stock. Alternatively, the specialist trade offers special seed mixtures such as 'Loretta repair lawn seeds' or 'Neudorff seamless'. How to sow correctly:

  • Set the spreader to the manufacturer's recommended distribution density
  • Pour lawn seeds into the spreader and mix thoroughly by hand
  • Push a lawn roller over the seed for good soil contact

You can scatter lawn seeds by hand. In order to better estimate the seed density, weigh a handful of seeds beforehand. Please distribute the seeds in two directions - first lengthways, then crossways. Once you have established the necessary ground contact, irrigate the lawn area thoroughly.

Aftercare

After scarifying and overseeding, keep the lawn slightly moist to protect the seedlings from drought stress. In dry weather, irrigate the re-sown green area daily in the early morning or in the evening hours. The lawn receives the first cut at a height of 8 to 10 cm.

Tips

The time window is open between April and September to scarify a moss-covered lawn. However, the scarifier should remain in the shed when it has rained. Tearing wet lawns with the sharp scarifying blades leaves a swamp desert that cannot be repaired by simply overseeding.
