Freezing grapes perfectly - this is what you should pay attention to

Fast freezing promises maximum enjoyment

If fruit is frozen, it quickly becomes mushy after defrosting and can only be used as a compote. Not so with grapes, because the smooth skin prevents the dilemma. Of course, there are some guidelines to be followed. As a general rule of thumb, the faster the fruit is frozen, the crisper and more aromatic it will taste. How to do it right:

  • Use grapes with a firm, intact skin and without stems
  • Wash in a sieve under running water and pat dry
  • Spread out on a plate or baking sheet without them touching each other
  • Sieve with fine sugar to taste

Now slide the plate into the quick freezer of the freezer. The grapes are frozen through after 4 to 5 hours. The fruits must not stay longer than one night in order to preserve a maximum of aroma and texture. Now they are ideally suited for immediate consumption as an addition to ice cream or for use as fruity ice cubes in drinks.

Preferably freeze seedless and blue grapes

Experienced housewives have long known: Green grapes with seeds are mushy after freezing. In this consistency they can still be used for the preparation of compote, jam or syrup. Blue and seedless grape varieties, on the other hand, have the best chance of decorating a dessert or cake topping after defrosting. Proceed as follows to ensure that table grapes can be kept in the freezer for up to 6 months:

  • get out of the chest after quick freezing,
  • without letting the grapes thaw, fill them straight away in freezer bags or cans,
  • close tightly and date

Since the fruits are already pre-frozen, they do not stick together in the bag or can. Space-saving storage is therefore possible without any problems. Adult connoisseurs are allowed to consume the grapes that are still frozen. They are taboo for small children in this state because the smooth skin of the berries could slip into the throat and get stuck there.

Tips & Tricks

If green grapes turn out to be very soft after thawing, they turn into a delicious grape juice by boiling them down. Pour 2 kilograms of grapes with 250 milliliters of apple juice into a cauldron and simmer until all the fruits have burst open. Put through a sieve and let cool - a refreshing grape juice is ready.
