What distance when planting thuja?

The correct planting distance for the thuja ensures that the hedge grows quickly and becomes opaque. Even when planting as a solitary, the distance should not be too close.

How far apart the individual thuja trees should be planted depends on which variety you plant and how quickly the hedges should become dense. What distance must be kept:

  • in the hedge
  • for single trees
  • to streets and paths
  • to supply lines
  • to the neighboring property

How far apart in the hedge?

In order to get an opaque hedge made of arborvitae as quickly as possible, keep a planting distance of 40 to 60 cm. You need 2 to 3 plants per running meter of hedge.

However, this does not apply to all varieties. Find out from your gardener which plant spacing is ideal for the variety you have chosen.

Plant thuja as a solitary plant

If you plant a thuja as a solitary plant, a planting distance of about one meter from other plants is sufficient.

Maintain sufficient distance to neighboring properties

The distance to the neighboring property is regulated by the municipalities. It is usually the same length as the height of the hedge or tree.

Plant distance to supply lines

The tree of life is a shallow root. The roots are not very strong, but widely branched. It is unlikely that they will damage utility lines in the ground over time.

How far to plant thuja from roads?

Thuja does not tolerate road salt. The tree of life reacts to this with brown needles and tips. Therefore, place the thuja far enough from paths and roads that road salt cannot get near it.

The roots branch out heavily underground. It cannot therefore be ruled out that terrace slabs, pavement slabs and road surfaces will be lifted after a long period of time. Since a thuja hedge stays in place for a very long time, you should keep a sufficient distance to be on the safe side.

Walls are usually not at risk of being damaged by the thuja's roots.

Some varieties need more space between them

This is especially true of the extremely popular thuja emerald. It is popular as a hedge, although it will not grow well if it is too dense.

Thuja Smaragd should be planted in the hedge with a planting distance of at least 60, even better 80 cm. Only then can this arborvitae variety thrive.

If the planting distance is too short, the roots will not be adequately supplied with nutrients and moisture.

Tips

The location for thuja should be as sunny as possible, at best partially shaded. The tree of life does not thrive in the shade. Thuja also likes it a bit sheltered from the wind.
