Re-clad a garden house - is that possible?

Re-clad a garden house - is that possible?

Before cladding - remove defective material

First, check all the walls and remove any weathered boards. Even insulation that has already become damp must be removed and replaced with new insulation, otherwise there is a risk of mold. Install new OSB panels over the insulation layer. Now it's time to dress up again.

Which materials are suitable?

There are various options available to you for this:

  • Profile boards are very popular because they are easy to work with.
  • Following the principle of the curtain-type, rear-ventilated facade, you can also clad the garden house (€ 7.70 on Amazon *) with vinyl, artificial slate or other modern plastics.

Renovation with profiled boards is nicer because it looks more natural, and can be installed with a little manual skill. Therefore we would like to limit ourselves to these in our following instructions.

What has to be considered?

  • Always process profile boards in the outdoor area vertically or with the groove pointing downwards. So no water can collect.
  • Work very carefully, because a perpendicular alignment will later be unattractive.
  • If possible, an assistant should be available for the new cladding, who aligns and fixes the profile boards while you screw them together.
  • Profiled boards made of larch wood are ideal. Be sure to include other types of wood.

Is additional wood protection necessary?

You do not necessarily have to paint larch wood, as it is very resistant and weathered in a pretty gray shade. Depending on the location in the garden, however, a colored coating looks more attractive. If you decide on this variant, always use special weather protection or facade paints for wooden substrates.

Method:

  • Cut the vapor barrier film from the roof or pull it tight and staple it onto the OSE panels.
  • Attach horizontal counter battens. The distance should not be greater than 65 centimeters.
  • Saw off the groove on the first board and pre-drill the screw holes.
  • Screw on plumb, leaving a centimeter of space for the roof lining. This is important for rear ventilation.
  • Attach the second and all other boards.
  • So that the tongue or groove does not splinter or even break, you should not join the profile boards directly with the slat hammer, but create a board section.
  • Pre-cut boards to length on the windows and doors. Producing a uniform cutout after assembly is extremely difficult.

Are all profile boards attached? Then, if desired, you can paint this with an insulating primer and then apply wood protection paint.

Tips

Shutters give the summer house a cozy look. You do not have to laboriously manufacture these yourself, but can use inexpensive louvre doors that you also pretreat with weather protection paint.
