The cherry laurel - a deep root or a shallow root?
In trees that belong to the group of shallow roots, the roots run directly below the surface of the earth. In deep-rooters or taprooters, the long main roots often protrude several meters into the ground. Due to the plate-shaped expansion of the roots, shallow roots are much more vulnerable to storms than the firmly anchored deep roots.

Due to its root shape, the cherry laurel cannot be assigned to any of these root types.
The cherry laurel is a heart root
In contrast to these trees, the cherry laurel is a heart root. The root system of the laurel cherry consists of various strong main roots that run not only vertically but in all directions.
In the case of a cherry laurel offshoot, a deep tap root is formed. Several main roots with strong side roots grow out of this later. This results in the typical heart shape in the cross section of the roots.
As a bush that thrives in its original home in the shade of light forests, the cherry laurel is forced to prevail over other trees and shrubs. Since the roots of the laurel cherry do not reach as deep as those of the deep-rooted and do not grow as shallow as those of the shallow-root, the plant ensures its optimal nutrient supply.
The roots adapt to the environment
Since plants are living beings that can adapt very well to the existing conditions, the growth form of the root system can vary somewhat. The roots always develop in the direction in which the cherry laurel finds enough nutrients. The cherry laurel can develop very deep roots in dry regions in order to be able to absorb sufficient water.
Tips & Tricks
So that the cherry laurel thrives well, the soil around the bushes should be carefully loosened from time to time. The fine root system is very sensitive to surface compaction and waterlogging. A layer of bark mulch about ten centimeters thick, which helps loosen and improve the soil, is ideal.
