What are curbs used for anyway?

Curbs serve on the one hand to visually delimit a path, but they also contribute to stability. For example, on paths made of gravel, grit (€ 12.80 at Amazon *) or bark mulch, a border prevents the material from getting into the adjacent beds. But even a paved path is made more stable by curb stones, especially if these are set in concrete.

What special features do I have to consider?

Without curbs, your path may lack stability. That is why you should definitely create a solid substructure. Otherwise your new path will probably not last very long. However, this only applies to paths that are not too heavily used. If loads are often transported in a wheelbarrow on a narrow path or if a car is even supposed to drive there, you do not forego any possibility of stabilization.

If you have decided on a path without curbs, you can also fix it in a different way. Instead of the curb stones, put the outer row of the selected paving stones in concrete. You can do this either at the beginning of the paving work or as the last step.

In the second case, lay the path completely without any edges and then take the outer rows of stones on both sides of the path back up to set them in concrete. This may be a little complicated, but it gives good results. You can also use this to correct the route during the paving work.

The most important information about curbs:

  • serve to visually delimit and stabilize the path
  • Alternative to curbs: lawn edges
  • It is better not to lay heavily used paths without curbs
  • alternatively, put the outer row of paving stones in concrete

Tips

If you do not want to set curbs, you should pay attention to a particularly solid substructure. It serves the stability of your path.
