Experience has shown that in the fall, put garlic ripens into larger onions. This may be due to the longer time spent in the ground or the intense cold stimulus in the change of the seasons.

This is how the location for garlic should be

In order for garlic to thrive, a few site conditions have to be taken into account.

  • sunny, warm, sheltered location
  • humus-rich, well-drained, loamy-sandy soil
  • a moderate nutrient content promotes the aroma

Knowledgeable hobby gardeners use the protective effect of garlic on diseases and pests. In mixed culture with strawberries, carrots, tomatoes or peppers, the spice plant keeps uninvited guests away from its neighbors. Garlic, on the other hand, should not share the same location with beans, peas, cabbage or potatoes.

Step-by-step instructions on how to stick garlic

Both bulbs and garlic cloves are suitable as planting material. If your neighbor is already cultivating garlic, just ask him about the bulbs after flowering. The small purple seeds are cut out of the flower. Alternatively, divide a tuber into toes.

  • Loosen the bedding soil and weed it thoroughly
  • optionally work in finely sieved compost
  • Tuck your toes 6 cm down with the point up
  • Brood bulbs are only 2-3 cm deep in the ground
  • the ideal planting distance is 15-20 cm

A sufficient row spacing of 45 to 50 cm makes subsequent maintenance work much easier. The addition of fertilizer is a controversial topic among amateur gardeners. If you do without nutrients, the plants stay smaller, but in return they develop a more intense aroma.

Take special precautions when planting in autumn

Although garlic is one of the hardy plants, winter protection is recommended after autumn planting. A thick layer of leaves or straw works wonders in this regard. The warming effect is topped by mulch film, which also suppresses weeds in the next spring.

However, you should refrain from using the frequently proclaimed bark mulch. This material has been shown to remove nutrients from the soil. In this case, you would not be able to avoid the administration of fertilizer, which in turn is at the expense of the garlic taste.
