Diseases more common in red currants
Even if the red currant is basically robust, a bad location and too much moisture cause it to create. In this case, fungal diseases are often observed. The most common diseases include:
- Leaf fall disease
- Instinct death
- Stinging nettle leaves
- Pillar grate
- Colletotrichum fruit rot

Small overview of diseases
|illness||Symptoms leaves||Symptoms of shoots||trigger||treatment||particularities|
|Leaf fall disease||brown spots, curl up, fall off||Sometimes brown shoots||Mushrooms||Cut off shoots||after a damp spring|
|Instinct death||no leaf development||does not sprout, shoots die||various causes||Cut off shoots||frequent parasite infestation|
|Stinging nettle leaves||Leaf discoloration||few flowers||Gall mosquitoes||Cut off shoots||cut back heavily in autumn|
|mildew||whitish coating||no||Mushrooms||cut affected parts||treat with diluted milk|
|Pillar grate||red-orange pustules||no||Mushrooms||Cut off shoots||Chop down pine trees in the area|
|Colletotrichum fruit rot||no||turn brown and dry up||Mushrooms||Cut, treat with nettle stock||Berries become light and dry up|
There is not much you can do about pillar rust. The fungal spores overwinter in pines. To prevent red currant disease, all of the pine trees in the area would have to be felled.
Prevention is better than cure
So that the red currant does not get sick in the first place, ensure a good location. The soil should not be too wet or too dry.
Cut the red currant twice a year, once immediately after the harvest and a second time in autumn.
When doing this, light the bush well. This makes it harder for pathogens to spread.
Pests are also responsible for diseases
There are a number of pests that appear on red currants. You should therefore examine the bushes at regular intervals. This is an effective way of preventing severe infestation.
Diseased plant parts such as leaves, fruit mummies or cut shoots must never be disposed of on the compost. As a result, the diseases spread to other, healthy plants. Throw the plant residues in the household garbage can or burn them, if this is allowed in your area.
