Dogwood - many types and varieties for every garden

Red dogwood (Cornus sanguinea)

The lush, white flower umbels appear between May and June. In autumn the foliage of this hornbeam species turns bright red, which creates a nice contrast to the black-blue, small stone fruits. The 'Midwinter Fire' variety shows a particularly interesting autumnal play of colors.

White dogwood (Cornus alba)

Between May and July, the white dogwood - sometimes referred to as the Tatar dogwood - shows its pretty, creamy white flowers. Depending on the variety, the fruits can be white to bluish in color. The broad, upright shrub turns its otherwise green foliage yellow to red in autumn.

Japanese dogwood (Cornus kousa)

Japanese flower dogwood is cultivated mainly for its distinctive floral decorations. The actual flowers are quite inconspicuous, but are surrounded by four large, white bracts and are therefore very noticeable. The strawberry-like fruits are colored pink.

Cornelian cherry (Cornus officinalis)

The bright yellow blossoms of the Japanese cornel can be seen very early in the year. The conspicuous flower umbels already appear in March / April, whereby the strong autumn color of the rather slender and narrow tree is a real eye-catcher.

Yellow dogwood (Cornus mas)

This dogwood also impresses with its bright yellow flowers, which appear between March and April before the leaves shoot. The yellow dogwood is a native species of the cornel.

Pagoda dogwood (Cornus controversa)

The pagoda or tier dogwood is particularly noticeable because of its pyramidal growth.

Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida)

Similar to the Japanese dogwood, the American flower dogwood also inspires with very large, beautiful white flowers.

Carpet dogwood (Cornus canadensis)

In contrast to the other dogwoods, this species is not a tree or shrub, but a ground cover - which, however, comes up with the flowering and autumn colors typical of this group of plants.

Tips

So-called flower dogwoods are particularly exotic in this country, including the Japanese dogwood as well as the Chinese dogwood or the American flower dogwood.
